Sustainable Leadership One Army Leader's Views on Leadership and
What it Takes to Lead in the Area of Sustainability
The Army Corps of Engineers is known around the world as a premier public engineering organization. It is
now pursuing initiatives and opportunities to advance its reputation in the arena of sustainable engineering
through new materials, revised processes, and exciting new projects. Army Corps of Engineers District
Commander in Los Angeles, Colonel Tom Magness, will showcase ways in which the Corps is embracing this
approach. His talk will also weave in what this means to leaders and those who desire to sustain leadership
greatness. Colonel Magness is a 23-year Army veteran with a variety of leadership assignments around the
world. The District directed by Col. Magness includes 226,000 square miles of Southern California, Arizona,
Nevada and Utah, and is responsible for permitting some of the nation's most signifi cant public and private
infrastructure projects. The Army Corps is critically important to civil service projects in the United States,
in Iraq, and along the US-Mexican border. Col. Magness oversees a $1Billion annual district budget, and is
responsible for water resource development and the maintenance of navigation channels at more than a dozen
harbors along the California coast. In and around Orange County, he is responsible for fl ood control projects
and environmental restoration projects.
