Which Way CA?   Part I: The Intersection of Politics and Policy

As the State's chief elections officer, archivist, member of the California State World Trade Commission, and head of the state agency responsible for processing and maintaining a vast array of business and government filings and documents, Secretary of State Bill Jones is in the unique position of impacting the intersection of politics and government policy. Following his election in 1994, Jones conducted the state's first Elections Summit to help guarantee a fraud-free voting system and established a Voter Fraud Task Force, implementing strict penalties for candidates and lobbyists who fail to meet important disclosure requirements. Jones has also led his agency in other important policy arenas, including proposing public safety plans for rolling blackouts, easy access to internet based services, public disclosure of state spending on energy purchases, and other issues of major concern. As reapportionment decisions are made, determining electoral boundaries for federal, state and county districts, and the 2002 elections approach, Jones will continue to be a major voice in public debate.
