C-SPAN’s Coverage of Our Government at Work
Has it Changed the Political Process — or the Mainstream Media’s Commentary of Political Issues?
In the country where conventional wisdom says that no one should watch laws or sausages being made, the
Cable Satellite Public Affairs Network -–C-SPAN—has, since 1979, thrown open the door to politics and
government in Washington and throughout the U.S. In 1979, C-SPAN, a cable-industry financed non-profit
television network began gavel-to-gavel coverage of the U.S. House of Representatives on cable TV. It began
televising the U.S. Senate in 1986 and since that time has provided Americans with coverage of political
conventions, campaign debates, insightful book reviews, political call-in programs on the major issues of the
day as well as National Press Club luncheons and more.
The seemingly enormous success of this purely public
affairs enterprise begs the questions: has all the open, unedited, unadulterated coverage of the Congress and
government in general changed the political process? Has televised access to the inner workings of
government fostered a more informed citizenry, more active in government and the political process? Has
C-SPAN’s “just the facts,” objective presentation of political and government issues had an impact on the
mainstream media and its penchant for broad commentary? And what could television networks and pundits
learn from C-SPAN’s approach to coverage of issues of the day? Brian Lamb, CEO of C-SPAN Networks,
will explore these questions at the Orange County Forum.
