With the University of California, Irvine’s 50th Anniversary Celebration underway,
Newly-appointed Chancellor Howard Gillman, Ph.D.

will share his vision for leading UCI into its brighter future.

Chancellor Gillman leads a campus with more than 29,000 undergraduate and graduate students, 1,100 faculty, and 9,400 fulltime staff. Consistently ranked among the nation’s best universities, UCI is a major intellectual and cultural center that generates an annual economic impact of $4.4 billion in Orange County, and, with its scholarly, scientific, creative, and economic contributions, a vitally important anchoring institution for Orange County. From providing a safe and secure on-campus home for students to ensuring that the UCI Medical Center provides the most up-to-date healthcare in the region, the chancellor is both a leader, keenly attuned to the challenges and opportunities facing a globally preeminent campus, and an executive with the expertise to manage Orange County’s second largest workforce, a $2.4 billion budget, and a dynamic “city” that includes a medical center, sustainable infrastructure, and the full range of services vital to the successful operation of the campus.

Howard Gillman, Ph.D., was appointed the sixth chancellor of UC Irvine on September 18, 2014. Born in Southern California, Chancellor Gillman grew up in the San Fernando Valley and was the first in his family to go to college. He earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees at UCLA. He previously served as UCI’s provost, and before that he served for five years as dean of the University of Southern California’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Science.
